Dancing in the streets

Every year the IRL hauls the 33 drivers entered in the Indianapolis 500 to New York for a photo shoot, having them stand in their finest "lock step" formation like this.

And every year I look at that picture thinking they're all gonna start doing a little twitch in unison, and next thing you know...

Come on, we even got an award winning dancer starting from the pole. How has this not happened yet?

  3. Thanks, Andy. I watched. That is now embedded in my head again. Years of therapy finally erased it from my memory. Now it's back.

I think it would be a lot of fun if that group of drivers (and there are several who would start it if encouraged) would suddenly start doing something nuts like dancing around while they try to take that picture. And I can't think of anyone in that group who wouldn't go along with it, even DP.

  4. YouTube jocularity not withstanding, I never understood why the IRL did this photo. Schlep all the drivers from Indy to NYC, bus them to the location, line them up, take a photo wherein you can recognize five of them, schlep them all back to Indy the same day. Maybe it attracts news coverage and video in NYC (I certainly hope so given the expense of getting everyone there, etc.), but the photo is almost always unimpressive (try photographing 33 people in 11 rows of 3 sometime). It's especially flaccid this year since they had to widen out to get the car and the IZOD awnings, etc. Viewing not enhanced.

  5. With the weather in Indy this month, they shoulda kicked a few puddles and twirled umbrellas to "Singing in the Rain"!

  6. The full global impact of the Thriller video is only now starting to be known. That's just how magnificent it was.

Is this because it's the ONLY dance I do at parties, regardless of the song? I would argue no. But I'm open to discussing it.

  7. Steve,

Sadly there is no comparable group number in "Singin in the Rain", although I'd give anything to see the AGR drivers performing a rendition of "Good Morning" on race day.

  8. That photo shoot is one of the most embarassing things every year. Last year (or maybe 2007?) there were bystanders in the shot who weren't paying the drivers a lick of attention. I'm sure it's just a small part of the day, but it's stupid beyond words.

  9. The last couple years (I think) the photo's been taken with the Merrill Lynch bull statue on Wall Street. Guess that wasn't the hot spot to take the photo this year...
