Little Al weighs in on '09 drivers

Al Unser Jr has opinions on every single one of the current IndyCar series roster over at IndyTrackside (no relation to TrackSide Online or TrackSide with Cavin and Lee).

For example, EJ Viso:

"E.J. is one of my favorites. He was a rookie last season and was fast right away. He's physically as strong as Tony Kanaan. He's got the eye of the tiger. He definitely wants to win. He's got the team to do some great things. They made some great strides last year. Expect as the season goes on, he's going to get quicker and quicker and quicker. As the team learns more about the IndyCar Series car and so on, he's going to be knocking on the door real hard to win a race."
You may think I'm using EJ as an example just to meet the Viso quotient required of all IndyCar sites. Perhaps, but it also gives me a reason me to post this example of marketing genius.

Who DIDN'T Al Jr like ??? He even praised Milk & Donuts!!! WTF?

I'm very happy that Al Jr is clean & sober... but is he taking some experimental anti-alcoholic drug?

Side effects are the patient is pumped full of Happy-Happy Joy-Joy. Come on Al, you must have SOME crits of SOME of the IRL field???

Well, when you are getting a paycheck from the league, should you really be trashing drivers, no matter what your feelings are?

I don't it's so much the paycheck as the fact that it's his job to help a lot of these drivers become capable of performing in the series. He's personally invested in training a lot of them so he's going talk some of them up.

I do think you can read between the lines on some of these, where he says certain people "can win" and where he says others "work hard".

No, I didn't expect him to... my backwards way of saying Why bother publishing such a puff interview?

Reading between the lines hurts my eyes :) :)

What can Little Al say? He's a very positive person. At least we got to see the most excellent GLEN commercial. Should balance this out with Robin Miller's take on drivers. "Everyone SUCKS!" Kidding. I kid Robin. I'm a kidder.

Things Little Al apparently can't say: this driver struggles despite making gains, this driver will be great when he stops wrecking people, this driver is hard to assess given that the team he's on just plain sucks, and this driver is just plain hopeless.

He obviously can't say anything negative, and yeah reading between the lines there are hints, but I still feel kind of like I wasted my time reading his comments.

Things versus should consider: televising Trackside with Curt and Kevin. Add in some driver interviews during their shows. All in all though I'd consider what they've shown over the past month a step in the right direction.

Things a telecaster should never say about a female snowboarder: "She's a real firecracker at riding the pipe."

    That is all.
