"You shouldn't need people to win races to promote a series. Marketing people and the PR people need to get off their a-- and promote the winners because long term, what's the point in promoting someone who's not going to win? It's not going to do you any good. Everybody tried to promote Anna Kournikova because she looked good and she was new to tennis, but it didn't last because she wasn't any good. You need to promote the good ones." - Dan Wheldon, who should be gently reminded that he is winless in his last 15 races.
Something New to Complain About

This is old news now by now, and the furor has already died down. But I was
out of commission when this occurred and the reaction it brought is still
fresh...

Hmmmm, I wonder who Dan was pointing his comments at?
I seem to recall seeing Dan at the 2005 USGP with a T-shirt that read "I actually won the 500" I think Dan has plenty of results for him to make that statement and plenty of past experience with the league not promoting him in favor of Danica.
Dan should tell Chip & Target to promte him through Target print and TV ads.
you know what? i think he has something of a point. but mostly in the getting off the @*$.
Dan Wheldon, who should be gently reminded that he is winless in his last 15 races.
Why should he be reminded of that? Why does that discount his opinion? Dan's a proven winner and a proven champion. He has every right to be saying that. Now if Danica or Ed Carpenter or Darren Manning or, hell, even Marco, had said it, I'd see a point to your playful little jab.
As it stands, it's dismissive.
I included the word "gently" for exactly that reason. He HAS won plenty of race - including Indy - but it's still noteworthy tthat he's talking about "winners" when lately he hasn't been winning squat.
This post isn't a slam against either Dan or Danica, just noting how they continue to slam each other. And I like that a lot.
Eh, sorry, Jeff. Commented then actually read the whole article. Dan very easily could have said what he needed to without going "there" which actually annoyed me a bit LOL.
But yeah, he and Danica like to take shots at each other and I'm starting to think the whole thing is a work.
Speaking of chicks winning, though... I'm thinking someone paid your distantdistantdistantdistant relative, Richard Antinucci, to punt Bia outta the win yesterday. Can't have her beating Danica to that first win, can we?
Jeff, mate,
I said what I said because look at me life so far:
I've got killer bills from all that work on me choppers. Do you know what it costs for an Englishman to get proper dental work here in the US?!? If I win the Indy 500 and the championship this year, I'm still out $10K, and that's at the cheaper dollar to pound exchange rate!
Next, like a right fool, I go off and get hitched, 'cause me mate Scotty tied the knot. First off, the wife wants a new house. Something near the water in Florida. Plumeting house prices here in the US? Not bloody well likely where she wants to live, I'll tell you mate! Now she figures I should buy her a new car. Not a Honda, mate, I'll tell you! No, she wants a bloody Lexus AND a Mercedes!
And then, I got the bill for the wedding. Do you have ANY idea how much Chip Ganassi can eat and drink? And now that Scott & Emma and Tony & his wife are starting families, me wife is all like "Oh Dan, we should start a family, aren't babies cute?" and all that! And of course the minute the baby comes you know who trades his sports car in for a friggin' Honda Odyssey, eh mate?
So I'm not slaggin' ol' what's 'er name over at AGR, I'm beggin' for endorsements! I need the money, mate! I'm almost down to me last quid, so Jeff, can ya' lend me a fiver for the week?
LOL... poor Dan.
Lil' Danny! That is a great find, if not for vanity!
Public Relations/promotion is like driving a race car, everybody on the planet thinks it's easier and cheaper than it actually is.
