What we know

Despite yesterday's ambiguous news of a partial verdict (that there is one - not that anyone other than the jurors knows what it is), with jurors still deliberating the remaining charges there are a few things we can derive at this point.

1. The good. Some juror(s) thinks Helio is eee-nnocent of something.

2. The bad. Some juror(s) thinks Helio is guilty of something.

3. The ugly. It doesn't look like there's any way Helio Castroneves will be driving at the Grand Prix of Long Beach this weekend.

Time for your humble host to hit the road for 300-and-some miles. If anything happens in the next few hours - like say full verdict is reached in the Castroneves trial, or someone indicts a ham sandwich, or if Darren Manning loses his accent - by all means, let me know.

How does 16th and Georgetown have copies of the verdicts? Those documents say Helio is guilty on the two counts. But yet no other news agency or blog is reporting it. Just the 16th and Georgetown Blog. Are those documents legitimate??

Hmmm. Lets see...jury has a verdict on all counts against Miller (thats count 1,3,4,5). Now count 1 has the real "teeth" in it, but its a conspiracy charge--and by definition a conspiracy must have two or more people. So how could Miller be guilty of a conspiracy without the jury finding that Helio and/or Katucia is also guilty? Sounds like Miller might be off (yeah!!!).

John, I am not seeing copies of verdicts. I am seeing copies of the "Counts" which look to me like the charges. There is no evidence of any verdict on said counts from 16th and Georgetown.

Thanks Edmund. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to legal terms and documents, and I read the counts and it led me to believe those were the verdicts. It makes sense now. I feel like an idiot.

Can we just replace Judge Graham with Brian Barnhardt? Then have IHJ dole out some meaningless judgment that in no way impacts actual racing. Perhaps we can just take care of this in the next driver's meeting. Or just over the radio - "Pay your taxes car 3!"

Cavin is reporting that Penske has a third car ready at Long Beach, "just in case".

    In other unfortunate news...

"...while practice was underway Helio Castroneves was found not legal by the jury in his tax evasion trial..."

    That's a shame.

Say what you want about Helio, but this is huge huge huge huge huge huge for the ICS.

Just to make it official, Helio is leaving on a jet plane:

Team Penske announced that Castroneves will compete in the No. 3 car in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Will Power will drive the No. 12 Verizon Wireless entry for Team Penske.

So what we can learn from this is that Roger Penske can find a sponsor of the caliber of Verizon Wireless at the drop of a hat.

Maybe he needs to put on a seminar for all the other Indycar teams on sponsor sourcing?
